It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

We at Delicious Decadence LOVE Christmas!

The Festive season is almost upon us, and Christmas is just around the corner, with only about 7 weeks to go before the big day itself! Not that we are trying to panic you, rather reminding you that we are here to provide you with lots of lovely christmas treats! We are now taking orders for Christmas Cakes and all other Christmas goodies including mince pies and yule logs!

We close for the Christmas period on Wednesday the 23rd December at 4pm, but we are happy to make orders to go out right up until that day and time! If there is something you want making then just let us know!

Below is a list of the most common things we get asked for and their prices, but if what you want isn’t on the list don’t let that stop you, or in deed us, because we love a challenge and are happy to make things to order to suit your christmas wish!

Fruit Christmas Cakes – made to a traditional recipe and fed with alcohol in the weeks leading up to Christmas, they are finished with marzipan and either fondant or royal icing, and a form of decoration that you choose.

8 inch – £30.00

10 inch – £37.50

12 inch – £45.00

We can still make all of our normal cakes and cupcakes to order (see the relevant page for all information) but we are happy to give them a festive edge for no extra cost. However, if you would like any cake to be covered in fondant icing rather than buttercream, there is a £5 charge.

If fruit cake isn’t your thing at christmas, how about ordering a Chocolate Yule Log decorated with rich and creamy chocolate buttercream? Definitely sounds appealing!

Chocolate Yule log (one size, but it is big!) – £30

It wouldn’t be Christmas without some Mince Pies. We make them with lovely flaky shortcrust pastry and an alcohol-fuelled mincemeat filling, we then top them with an almond macaroon style topping, just to be different! If you would prefer them done in a more traditional manner, then just let us know!

Box of 6 Mince Pies – £5

Hopefully just reading through this has got you in a festive mood! We are happy to help with whatever you have planned for Christmas, so just get in touch and let us know what we can do for you!

Easter

Due to it being the Easter weekend in a couple of weeks time, we thought we’d better let all our lovely customers know that the shop will be closing for a week from Tuesday 31st March until Tuesday 7th April, therefore meaning we won’t be open over Easter.

The shop will be back open as normal on Wednesday 8th April so please come and say hi and grab a slice of cake and a coffee or stay a bit longer and have breakfast or lunch with us!

We apologise for any inconvenience caused and we hope no one suffers too much from there being a lack of cake for a few days!

Afternoon Tea

The big news this week is the fact that from now on we will be serving afternoon tea in the shop!

We already cater events with afternoon tea, but we will now be offering the same service in the shop for groups of up to eight people.

The price is £7.50 per person, which includes a selection of sandwiches (ham and wholegrain mustard, cheddar cheese and caramelised red onion chutney, smoked salmon, cucumber and cream cheese – these can be changed to cater for specific dietary needs and likes), miniature lemonade scones with jam and clotted cream, and a selection of miniature cakes including such things as victoria sandwiches, lemon loaves, chocolate brownie, cupcakes etc. Plus unlimited amounts of any of our teas, which include English breakfast, Earl Grey, Lady Grey, Green tea, Lapsang Souchong, Darjeeling, Assam, Peppermint, Camomile,  Chai, Red Bush, and endless amounts of fruit infusions!

The only think we ask is that you ring us and book a table with at least 24 hours notice, and we will do our absolute best to accommodate  your group!

We hope to see you soon!

Addition to the cupcake parties

Yesterday I foolishly missed off the fact that we can do cupcake parties for children!

Cupcake Parties for a group of children (under 16) are priced at £10 per child and include hire of the venue after 6pm, lots of time to decorate cupcakes in all manner of ways, which they then get to take away with them, all the ingredients required, use of equipment (under strict supervision), and soft drinks.

If the party is wanted in the afternoon, timings can be discussed and a pro rata charge would be added.

A party tea can be added for a charge of £5 per child.

If this sounds like something you’d be interested in then get in touch with Kate as soon as you can!

Cupcake Parties!

Depending on how closely you look at our website, you might have noticed that a new page has arrived!

We at Delicious Decadence are now offering you the chance to come in and spend your evening making and decorating cupcakes with us!

So go and have a look at the page and book your party ASAP!

Hello 2014!

In case you haven’t noticed already, it is now 2014! A very Happy New Year to you all!

With a new year comes a new website, which has had a lot of hard work and effort put into it so we hope you like it!

A new website isn’t the only thing though, our menu is about to get a makeover too!

Also, we will soon be announcing the introduction of cupcake classes at the shop – now if that isn’t exciting we don’t know what is!

Plus we hope if you are looking for any sort of celebration cakes, from a simple layer cake to the grandest of wedding cake, you will choose us!

Lets all make 2014 a good year!

We now do outside catering…how very exciting!

Clearly writing news posts is not my forte as I never seem to get round to doing it! This post is a necessary and important one though, so at least I am not rambling on for the sake of it!

The important news to announce (although from the title of this post you may have already worked it out!) is that we are now providing outside catering for any sort of function you may be having.

Last night we catered an event at George Stephenson High School in Killingworth and it went incredibly well – everyone was extremely pleased and people were taking boxes of cake home at the end of their evening!

The event last night was for 105 – nothing like being thrown in at the deep end for our first catering gig! However, it would now seem we are quite capable of pulling it off, so any number is quite welcome.

In terms of what is on offer, it would be a form of afternoon tea, whether that be traditional or something slightly more wacky. Think miniature sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, selection of large and small cakes – the works basically! And all brought to your door! With prices starting at £5 per head, we are also competitively priced, and more importantly, quite unique in what we do.

If you are at all interested get in touch with the shop – ring, email, comment here, or come in for a chat. We are quite happy to help!

We look forward to hearing from you all very soon!

A Picture is Worth a 1000 Words

I suddenly realised that I have written all sorts of things about the shop but not let anyone see it, so I thought I would do a picture post. Plus if you can see it, you might be persuaded to come along!

It has taken a lot of time and effort, and it isn’t quite finished yet, but here is pretty much the end result for your viewing pleasure! These pictures were taken while the shop was decorated for Easter so please excuse the small yellow chicks that are everywhere!

Up and running

So it’s taken me a little while to get round to writing another post, but in my defence, I have been a little bit busy…

As of today, the shop has been open for 8 weeks and 2 days! 8 whole weeks already, seems to have flown by!

What’s been happening I hear you cry…quite a lot is the quick answer!

We’re not doing too bad so far, I’m not complaining at any rate. We’ve got a lovely string of regulars developing, which I do rather love! It makes it all seem a bit more worth while when you see people returning! New people are always welcome and keep finding us, by accident if nothing else!
The mother is doing a sterling job (spelt right here but wrongly on the kitchen fridge because we ran out of magnetic letter ‘e’s) at bringing customers in by telling all her patients! Who knew feet and cake went so well together…oh wait…

People keep asking me if I’m enjoying it all and then genuinely seem surprised when I say yes! But I really am! I won’t lie though, I have had a few days, when its been a bit quiet, when I’ve thought have I made a huge mistake, but that passes the minute someone else comes in and orders a slice of cake! People appear to want the things I have to offer and as a result I can’t not enjoy what I’m doing! I want to make people happy and I’m going to do that by providing them with plenty of sugar! I am basically the complete opposite of a doctor or dentist!

So, what has been learnt in 8 weeks?

The most popular cake by far is coffee cake. It has won a lot of praise! I’m not even sure what it is I do that makes it so nice but it’s clearly working! The rocky road is also a firm favourite of many, unsurprising though that one! Who doesn’t love chocolate, cherries and marshmallows?! Very few, thats for sure!

I am very fortunate to have found such a lovely team of staff as well, people that I class as friends rather than anything else! I’m glad I get to go to work and spend my day laughing with people I get on with – not everyone gets that sort of working environment so I am definitely grateful for that…even if I did create it myself!

We are still finding and ironing out teething problems, something that I think will continue for a little while, but we are all working very hard to make things work. What’s most important to our customer is that they feel welcome and comfortable. The majority of people have been very nice and positive, commenting that they like the atmosphere and everything I have done to change the place, which is all very nice of them!

If anyone is reading this that hasn’t dropped by to see us yet, then you should definitely come along! Just for a cup of tea or coffee if nothing else! We’d love to meet you! If you have been in and you’re simply reading this to find out what is happening then come back soon!

We look forward to seeing anyone and everyone!

Progress report #1

I will post a progress report fairly regularly in order to keep you updated on what is going on at Delicious Decadence. If you’re on Facebook you can like ‘Delicious Decadence’ and you’ll be kept up to date on a daily (mostly anyway) basis, and you’ll get pictures more regularly also.
I kept meaning to start these sooner but time keeps disappearing! Therefore, the first report is rather long! Keep reading though because we have done a lot! The place is unrecognisable!
  • Finally got the keys and the mammoth task of getting the place up to my standards began – I have rather high standards! Bit of a problem in some respects!
  • Cleared out the cellar – an area that stretches beneath the entirety of the shop and was full of stuff from several of the previous owners, not to mention a lot of cobwebs and dirt! A thoroughly unpleasant job but it had to be done! Three car loads of rubbish taken to the tip and a whole load of scrap found!
  • Cleared out the shop, kitchen, and back room. Once again found a lot of stuff that went straight into black bags!
  • Purchased a lot of very important things – oven, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, furniture, sink, kitchen units, cutlery, crockery etc. Quite a bit of money spent but all very much required!
  • Did all the annoying filling and sanding down in the shop – took longer than expected!
  • Painted the shop – first had to be entirely painted white in order to cover the dark brown already on the walls, and then painted in my colours; Fairy Dust (pale pink), Chocolate Chip, and Toasted Almond (dark cream).
  • Ordered some more very important items, such as a coffee grinder so that I can actually serve freshly ground coffee.
  • Painted the office
  • Got the kitchen cleared to an extent – can’t completely clear it because that requires some plumbing work and a gas man!
  • Cleaned the kitchen tiles with my team of helpers! Took a day but they are now no longer covered in tile grout, grease and grime! Screwdrivers were required, which is slightly worrying!
  • Bought flooring for the toilets and the office
  • Finished the office – laid the floor, painted the woodwork, built a desk, bookcase, and wheelie chair, and added my own cute little touches.
  • Started work on the kitchen wall – involved ripping down what was there and starting from scratch. Bit of a mission but leaving my dad to sort it out!
  • Got the two toilets sorted – laid floor, put in the finishing touches, and scrubbed them clean
  • Painted the kitchen ceiling and walls
  • Got rid of the two huge serve-over counter fridges from the shop (amazing!) – means there is now space for a counter!
  • Cleaned the shop floor – took a good couple of hours from my mum!
  • Sofas and chairs were delivered
  • Cleaned the remaining fridge, which took three of us four hours…
  • Cleaned the till, which really shouldn’t have been necessary
  • Put the two sofas together and built the coffee table to go with them – not only a step forward for the shop but gives us somewhere comfy to sit during our lunch break!
  • Started building the kitchen cabinets
  • New handwash sink has been attached to the wall and plumbed in ready for use

I think that is everything for now! There are probably things I’ve forgotten because this list stretches from getting the keys up until this evening! All sorts of trials and tribulations have happened in the last month or so, which will most likely get written about separately at some point soon! I seem to be a bit short on time at the moment so the blog keeps getting forgotten about!

I’m going to try and get some photographs up in the gallery to show the progress in picture form, but bare with me on that!

Progress report #2 will come much sooner so won’t be quite as impressive!

A lot of hard work is being put in to make Delicious Decadence the perfect place I want it to be, so thank you to everyone that is helping out! You’re all doing a fantastic job!

Come back soon to find out more!
